The retreat will be offering a comprehensive aerial training program including:

Trapeze

Trapeze is the overall name for a collection of closely related aerial apparatus.

The trapeze (often abbreviated to "trap") is a short bar that is hung by two cords from a support higher up; when these cords and the support are included, the trapeze is shaped like a trapezoid.

Common forms of the trapeze include:

Static trapeze refers to a trapeze act in which the performer moves around the bar and ropes while the bar itself stays mostly in place.

Swinging Trapeze refers to an act done while the trapeze swings. The aerialist builds up swing from a still position, and uses the momentum of the swing to execute their tricks. Most of the tricks begin with the performer sitting or standing on the bar and end with the performer catching the bar in his/her hands or in an ankle hang.

Silks/Fabric/Tissue Aerial Silks is a circus art where a performer or performers hang and perform acrobatics while suspended by a special fabric. The performer/acrobat uses the fabric to: wrap, suspend, fall, swing, and spiral their body into and out of various positions.

Single & Double Hammock

Hammock is an apparatus created when fabric is suspended in a loop (or double loop) that can be hung on and performed inside, often with spinning and swinging capabilities

Straps

Two suspended leather straps with large loops on the ends. Can be swinging and/or spinning.

Hoop/Cerceaux/Lyra

The hoop act is an acrobatic, aerial ballet which is performed while suspended from a circular hoop that spins, orbits and may move up and down. "Cerceaux" is French for ring, while "Lyra" is the Italian word used for the apparatus.

Corde Lisse/Rope/Web Corde lisse is an aerial circus act that involves acrobatics on a vertically hanging rope. The name is French for "smooth rope". Moves are normally a combination of held postures and drops using ropes normally made from soft cotton about 25-30mm thick. It is closely related to aerial silks.

Aerial Specific Conditioning

Full body conditioning geared specifically to improve strength and coordination of muscles/muscle groups necessary for aerial.

Yoga

Hatha Yoga emphasizes the connection between breath and movement. Conscious breathing influences both physical and mental processes, facilitating deep relaxation and bringing energy and clarity to body and mind. The class will include strengthening, stretching and relaxation. Taught by Angola Murdoch

Kripalu Yoga is a meditation in motion. It combines the Hatha yoga postures with the inner reflection of Raja yoga to create a balance between body and mind. It concentrates on developing witness consciousness, which is the ability to reflect on the mind's activity without judgement. Postures and breath are used as tools to nurture the body and focus the mind. Taught by Jasmin Kortright

Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. Taught by local guest instructor Gloria of East Side Yoga Shala, Pahoa.
Partner Yoga is an acrobatic form of yoga based on poses with a partner in which participants stretch, balance and support one another. Workshop takes place at Yoga Oasis in a beautiful treetop yoga studio. Taught by Hayward, co-owner of Yoga Oasis.

Pilates

Based on Joseph Pilates, this workshop is a classical Pilates mat class that emphasizes abdominal strength, muscular control, and physical stamina. A great class to build core stability for all of your activities and an excellent complement to your aerial training.

Capoeira

Capoeira is the name given to the vibrant Afro-Brazilian art form that was developed in the 17th century by African slaves and their descendants. It is unlike any other martial art, in that it is 'played' (rather than fought) in a circle, to the accompaniment of live instruments, singing and clapping. Capoeira's dance-like movements are beautiful to watch, as they are based on achieving harmony with one's partner, exploring this dynamic in a safe, but challenging way. They teach grace, agility, flexibility, strength and endurance, as well as promoting a healthy relationship with others. The style of Capoeria will be Regional.

Stretch & Strength

The Hawaii Circus Retreat is designed to stretch and strengthen your mind, body, and imagination!

To address the physical aspects our mandate, our classes incorporate elements of traditional stretching and Active Isolated Stretching to improve your flexibility and your active range, as well as a multitude of strengthening programs. Conditioning exercises geared towards the specific classes will be integrated into each session, particularly aerial-specific exercises gathered and created by the coordinators to support your aerial work and balance your body. Tailored take-home exercises help participants address specific concerns and continue their stretch and strength programs at home.
